Day 30 – 2nd Presentation Day

Second presentation is more rush than first presentation; my group gathers all the work at the last minute so I was not as confident as the first presentation. I was very disappointed in myself, I knew I can do better but I failed to do it. I was quite disappointed in myself and lock myself in the room.

Reflection
I have decide that since I have screw up my 2nd presentation, I will have to do 2 time hard for the next assignment and promise not to slack anymore. How I wish my elder brother is at my side to give me the wakeup call, he always does when I did something wrong. Since he is not in China, I just have to wake myself up by myself then. Quiet down myself and think over what are the mistake I made.

Day 29 – Final Lecture & Interactive Day

Finally chapter 10 lecture today it will be our last lecture. Due to power supply was being cut out throughout the whole school but other places like canteen, laundry and bakery all have backup power generator. Mr Loh let our vote whether do we want to do quiz or notes first. We all vote that to do quiz first as we want to reserve some power to do the quiz.
At night time, we go over to a place like a karaoke room to see our Ngee Ann students’ performance and the games that China Student Leader planned for us. After we enter the room, they ask us to pick numbers. It is so surprising that Eshlyn and I took the same number (29) so lucky just case if they tell us to do weird things at least have Eshlyn by my side. First the first game, I was chosen to eat something and have to act out that we are eating normal cookie, after eating one mouth I do not know whether did I eat the odd cookie cause it taste like the same as normal cookie. So I ask them whether salty counted as odd or not.
MDE division is really high in demand; over 13 of us are either playing games or performance. (60+ %)
After that Eshlyn and I went to brought cake for Gloria and missed the group photo with the China Student Leader. After that we start our cake fights again!

Reflection
Finally I see a glimpse of hope of going to shopping as the final lecture is over now only left with 2 assignments only. First time I have got into a cake fight, I think since it is the last time I think so I think I should have some fun too. Have a lot of fun with the China people as they able to speak good English. I realize that a good environment is very important to learn a language and it will help to improve the way of speaking and accent.

Day 28 – Pharmaceutical Visit

Today we are going to another factory to visit, I thought it is going to be another few hours trip again but to my surprise that the trip took less than 1 hour and the tour took less than 30 minutes cause there is a lot of restriction around the place as they need to protect the drugs and said that we human beings are the dirtiest so in order to protect the drugs, we cannot get close to the factory only can walk around outside.
In the bus everyone is like on drugs, we kept on taking photographs.

Reflection
Lucky Dr Tan is at there to explain the type of machines to us or else I will not understand what the machines uses are for. I believe we can learn more new things if we can get in and see how drugs are produces.

Day 27 – Climbing up WuDang Shan

Day 27 – Climbing up WuDang Shan
We finally get to climb WuDang Shan, looking forward since yesterday. It is a test for my fitness, have been training in the hostel in our school for quite some time so the moment of truth.
When I climb up the peak of the mountain, there is a temple in that temple there are 3 main point you need to take note.
1. One of the pole have a pure gold block inside of it.
2. The bottom of the building is made of fossil stone which is 1000 years plus already.
3. The lamp in the temple have been there since the temple is built.

Reflection
I am climbing up a stair which is called the hundred steps, at here I walk away from the group and started my own pace when I thought that I have reach the top of the mountain. I realize that it just leading down to another flop of stairs. I suddenly have a thought, climbing this mountain is like life itself, many times in life, there are slopes that goes up which is hard to climb and it goes down, it seems easy but short. In life, unknowingly have been walking or climbing to catch up with other‘s pace but it is that important? I feel that follow my own pace and create a path for myself to go is which important, even though it may be hard like climbing the bottom of the mountain up to the peak but once I reach the peak, other things do not seems to be that important anymore.

Day 26 - WuDang Shan(武当山)

Day 26 – WuDang Shan(武当山)
WuDang were known for the many Taoist monasteries to be found there, monasteries which became known as an academic centre for the research, teaching and practice of meditation, Chinese martial arts, traditional Chinese medicine, Taoist agriculture practices and related arts. The 72 mountain peak lying towards to WuDang Shan making a picture of 72 mountain bowing towards the WuDang Shan as if it is the leader.
We took a 6 hours plus to the mid level of the WuDang Shan then we have our lunch before we head to Prince Slope(太子坡 ). Gloria and I paid 10 rmb for red strip in order to hang on the tree to pray for our studies and family, after that they direct us to the area to hang the red ribbon at a place so we went there. After that they ask our to buy Dragon Head Joss stick(龙头香) for 100 rmb and we still need to continue to pay for a tombstone that crave our name on it for another 100 rmb. Gloria and I getting scared as we need to pay more and more so we are getting worried so we wanted to go off already but the person threaten us that if we do not pay, we will be unlucky but we really do not want to pay anymore so we just go off. We went together and taste tea, the tea is so special after 3 cups of tea and I drink plain water, it feels sweet.

Reflection
Thought of see the chinese martial arts at WuDang Shan but do not see anything but instead I learn a valuable lesson that praying should be give in your own will not being force but since I have given the money already. I just hope that my family will be safe and studies will be better and I will work hard for it too.

Day 25 - IS(Business Etiquette) & Specs

Today we head to a different classroom something similar to secondary’s computer lab the only different the computers that we are using are control by the lecturer, we totally have no control over it, the only things we can control is our eyes. The way they teach is different from Singapore they teach us by posting the questions and answers is at the bottom of the same page. We really learn the way how China people break ice with other people from other countries is using wine and beer. It is a kind of respect to them and if you drink they will treat as their brother and it is easier to make business with them.
After that, the specs shop person promise to call Eshlyn before 2pm but they have not called and Eshlyn was panicking whether they took her specs and we have made a full payment already so in order to calm her down, I made a call over to the shop and she told me it is ready to be collect anything.
We went to collect specs and Eshlyn took almost 1 hours to test her specs and keep on asking the same old questions( How do I look?) and I will answer the same old answer ( You look nice).
When we walk pass another supermarket and decide to compare the prices of the cookies and other things.

Reflection
I learn the way of how China people how they break ice with other people so I have to start training my drinking( I am above 18 years old). Eshlyn worries too much and should take things easily, maybe I am in her position maybe I will worry of my 620 rmb also so I also learn to stand at other person’s stand.

Day 24 - Lessons & Shopping

After our lesson, I head to a shopping mail to look for specs with Eshlyn. I look here and there, still unable to choose the design that I like but something caught Eshlyn's eyes over at the shop. She keep on questioning whether it is nice and this and that. I keep on telling her, it is nice but do not think that it registers into her brain. After the specs shop, we head to the supermarket to buy the food and daily necessity for ourselves and others too since we going to supermarket.

Reflection
If want to go shopping for a long time, do send your clothes for laundry cause the laundry auntie will give our hostel auntie. She will place the pail of clothes at the middle of the hall and exhibit to the rest of the people in that building. Very embarrassing if you have underwears at there.

Day 23 - Outward Bound Day

Starting we need to line up into 4 rows and help each other to massage the shoulder. I have to say that ShunQing is really very good in that and Eshlyn have to work hard on that area.
Next we will get into groups. We need to create name for our tribe, flag, costume and last by not least a short skit to represent our tribe. We have a lot of fun design the flag, thinking of the tribe name, designing clothes for us and most importantly my tride leader! Xanier cause she is dragon boater so we call ourselves Dragon!( 龙)
Next is rock climbing! They have 2 paths to climb, our division choose the harder path and went over the easier one. There are people almost reaching the top but all do not make it.

I feel that trust fall is really testing our faith and are we able work with one and other. I have a shot at it and I thought that my group mates are unable to catch me but they did which makes me feel more comfortable.
The last activity is broken bridge, we have to jump over a gap, when you view the gap from the bottom, it seems small and short but when you are up there it is totally a different feeling.

Reflection
I tell myself, no matter how scary or high is the things, I will want to try it as it is one time based experience, I do not get to try it every day so since I am China with my friends. I should give it a shot, after pushing myself to the limit, I felt very good of myself and more confident to overcome things in my daily life. After Eshlyn’s accident, I told myself that I have to catch the next one with all my strength as she almost fall on her head lucky there and people that catch her. Somehow it was my fault, as I arrange the order, I thought that she is very light and place mostly girls as the catchers so make her so frighten. I told her sorry and confess to her as I think she should know the truth but I promise her that I will not let her fall again and I hope that I am able to keep that promise and promise are not meant to be broken, they are meant to be keep. Finally felt better after say this accident out.

Day 22 - Coca Cola Industrial Visit

Today, we finally get to visit an industry in China. I am pretty excited that we are able to visit and see the production side in China. Before we enter the place, the employee of Coca Cola requests that we remove the label of different brand of the water before we enter the place. We head to one of the room to view video and they offer us one bottle of the Coca Cola product. After the video, we are able to look through the glass to see the production line and view the making of the Coca Cola drinks.
After the industrial visit, we head down to a restaurant that sell authentic fish ball which is recommend by Dr Tan and Mr Loh. The amount of the fish ball seems to be uncountable! The food they serve taste a little like what my mummy will cook for me, when I was eating the food, I felt so warm in the heart and that is the first time I ate 3 bowls of rice! Each of us paid 10 RMB for that meal which is like a little bit more than S$2.

Reflection
When the employee ask us to remove the labels from the bottle as we are not allow to bring other brand of drinks into the industry, I wonder is it because they hope that they do not want their workers to think about other brands of drink. I saw the floor that is some bottle lying around but no one went to clear it, it is very dangerous and waste of glass bottles if someone step on them and fell, the organization have to pay money to the person so I think there should policy made or review the process again. Starting to miss the food in Singapore but on the other hand, the food in China is very cheap, I scared that when I go back to Singapore, I will feel that everything is expensive, 3 meals in China is like equal to 1 meal in Singapore.

Day 21 - IS Lesson & Information Gathering Day

Today our IS lesson is about China's history and Chinese Traditional Philosophy which includes Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The lecturer name was Philip An and he started off his lecture by go through with our the first King (皇帝)(Qin Shi Wang-秦始王) who is the first person to unite the whole of China, his real name is called嬴政,he is notorious for his atrocious deeds that he done like burning of books that go against the policy that he practice and kill the scholars that read those books (焚书坑儒). He undertook gigantic projects, he send his army to attack Xiong Nu(匈奴) and in order to prevent them to attack Great Wall of China is built by the north side of 3 country which is Qin(秦),Zhao(赵) and Yan(燕), the now famous city-sized mausoleum guarded by a life-sized Terracotta Army, and a massive national road system, all at the expense of numerous lives.
The basic teachings of Confucianism stress the importance of education for moral development of the individual so that the state can be governed by moral virtue rather than by the use of coercive laws. He believe that everyone have their own social order if everyone follows it, the world will be peaceful like prince is prince, and the minister is minister; when the father is father, and the son is son(君君,臣臣,父父,子子).
He stopped at Confucianism and will with the lesson next time.
After that, we heard that Mr Loh is sick so we wanted to visit him but we met with Dr Tan, he told us that Mr Loh just went back to his room and rest and he was feeling much better and started to eat already so we do not want to go and disturb him.
We take bus to the Grand Ocean shopping centre to do some information gathering, we spotted a few interesting things like tea with pearl is spelled wrong like tea with pear. This time, I went with a different group of people, we went to a steak house and eat which seems very high class but a set of steak only worth like 10 dollars. JunRu and I went different ways from the rest and collect data about the clothes in China. When we came into a shop which wrote 29 RMB for the jeans so we quickly rush in, she tried one piece and another piece and I lost count on how many times she tried, I think 3 to 5 times. When we arrive at the cashier, they told us is 129RMB! Oh my god! I am caught off guard so is JunRu I believe, we started to reason with the people at there but their voice is really loud and scared us so JunRu paid for the jean. I tried to comfort her by tell her that the jean is really make of good material (It is the truth!) to make her feel better. We went to one level which only sells girl stuff, as usual I will start calculating the price and recording down the price of the items that she like in case other shop sells at a cheaper price. I help her to cut down a price of a cloth from 50RMB to 40RMB feel pretty good!
Around 6pm, we went to meet up with the rest of the group. JunRu saw the girl making their nail and wanted to try. So the rest of the guys have to sit down there and wait for them. After making the nails, the girls cannot wash their hands, take out money and carry their bags so I have to help them.

Reflection
Last time, I watch before a show called Xun Qin Ji(寻秦记) which talking about a person went back to the past to see the history of Qin Shi Wang(秦始王), some of the parts are fictional but it have me a general idea of what Qin Shi Wang have done in the past and the lecturer helps me to clear the water and I am able to answer some of his question which give me a kind of satisfaction as Singaporean, I have some background information of the history of China and he was pretty impression that I am able to understand also. I also discover a small little error in his teaching; do not know whether I am right or not. He said that in Zhou dynasty, the king always enjoy himself in the wine lake and meat supply as much as forest (酒池肉林) but he said 肉林酒池. This time, I really take a good look at the mall as this time I have time to wonder around and discover many more shops that I do not visit before. The night view there is very pretty as the light glow in the dark with many different colours.

Day 19 - Bai Di Cheng(白帝城) & Sheng Nong (神农溪)

The ferry has stop over at a station for us to head to our next destination Bai Di Cheng whereby Gong Sun Shu when he was standing at the mountain and he looking at the process of his castle being build. He saw white smoke that looks like a white dragon coming out from one of the well in his castle so he name himself as the “White Emperor”( 白帝) and made a statue of himself and place it at a place called White Emperor Temple(白帝庙) but it was destroy in 1512 and was replace 2 times and name as三功祠 and then正义祠 to commemorate Liu Bei and Zhu Ge Liang so there is a saying “白帝城内无白帝,白帝庙祭刘先帝” means that the White Emperor Temple do not have Gong Sun Shu but have Liu Bei.
After that we went Shen Nong Xi(神农溪) which we will experience the old time, when people will row the boat and pull the boat. When we are heading to Shen Nong Jia(神农架), I saw coffin lying in a hole at the mountain, it was said to believe that when the people dead, they will be lift up to a high place and buried there so to let the descendant enjoy good luck and wealth as it is lying on the mountain represent stable in the house and water represent money and wealth.

Reflection

After the boat trackers pull us up to the shore, I wanted to give them some tips but the tour guide told us that we are still student so we do not need to give them tip normally they will ask for tip from the other tourists, if we really want to help them we can buy a book which comes with a CD from him and he will give tips to them and help the children there with their education. Do not know how true but despite it, Eshlyn still brought the book in strong faith that the tourist will do what he have promise. Maybe it is because I always think the bad side of human being maybe it is about that I have some faith in our kind too. There is a saying human are born naturally kind. He also told me that after 20 years maybe there is no more boat trackers as normally a boat is manage by one family but the children now have better education and not willing to take over the business so this boat trackers will slowly fade away on the surface of the world. Kind of sad but at least I have a taste of it before that is what that matters the most.

Day 18 - Journey to 3 Gorges Dam

Early in the morning everyone is busying logging into Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s website to check their result. I was quite upset about my result but since I am in China already so I just want to enjoy the trip. China is really big! We took around 5 hours plus ride over to the 3 gorges dam, other than us there were another group of tourist so we tried our best to stick together. After that we need take another bus up the 3 Gorges Dam exhibition room to view the model of the 3 Gorges Dam. The tour guide brief us on the how the ship is being transported and where are the water generators are placed. After that we went to a park in order to commemorate the 3 Gorges Dam. Around 9 to 10 plus we get up the ferry to rest, each of us is given a pass if we want to go up the roof of the ferry, we will need to show the pass in order to get up there and each pass cost 15rmb.

Hmmm...I am reading about the 3 Gorges Dam! Translation Time!

Here’s a write-up found at:
Tanziling Ridge
The Tanziling Ridge, at an elevation of 262.48 meters, commands a panoramic view of the Three Gorges Project.
Ascending the visitors’ stand on thetop of the ridge and majestic dam blocking the Yangtze River. The dam has a length of 2309.46 meters, a crest elevation of 185 meters and a maximum height of 181 meters, with the spillway section situated in the middle and two powerhouses and non-spillway sections on both sides. Looking north visitors will have a bird’s view of the double way 5-step shiplock, the major navigational construction, which cuts into the rock hill on the left bank. The shiplock, with a maximum excavation depth of 170 meters and a maximum water head of 113 meters, allows a fleet of 10,000 tonnages to sail through. The reservoir, with its total capacity of 39.3 billion m-cube and retain the upstream flood peaks. Installed with 26 units of 700 megawatts hydro turbine generators, the Three Gorges Power Plant boasts of a total generating capacity of 18,200 megawatts and an annual output of 84.7 TWh and may be rated as the greatest of its kind in the world. The body of the visitors’ stand is decorated with a large relief sculpture. With people and water as the theme, it embodies the tranditional cultures of ancient Ba and Chu areas and depicts the great undertakings of the Chiense people to harness rivers along the course of history. The concrete four-faced structure opposite the relief sculpture symbolizes the difficulties and dangers of damming the river. A core sample of the dam erecting on the right side of the ridge was dug out from the riverbed, displaying the favourable geopgraphic conditions of the dam-site. The rare shape stone standing on the grassland in front of the souvenir shop was found at the bottom of the Yangtze River after the river’s enclosure in 1997. It witnessed the geologic and geomorphic changes around this region. The construction of Three Gorges Project has made the long-cherished wish of the Chinese people come true. This great achievement is an embodiment of the wisdom and endeavors of all participants of the work and will render benefits to the future generations with its comprehensive functions in flood control, power generation and navigation improvement.

Reflection
Heard so much from my lecturer in Maritime Management about water lock but do not get the chance to see it, when I saw the waterlock is so big, I realise that I should get out of Singapore to look at the world more often. It is a great learning experience as I can see learn the different ways to transport the ship as there is a limit to the ship if it is a small ship, it is able to take the lift which one time able to reach up to 5 waterlock height and reduce in the time taken.
